What is the link between Zinc and Eczema?

  • by Petra Jelinkova

Children with eczema often have low levels of vitamins and minerals which are important in maintaining a healthy immune system, especially vitamins and minerals which are needed to keep the skin healthy and functioning well. Low levels of zinc are related to Vitamin A and Vitamin D deficiencies, which are also common in children who have eczema. These vitamins control the amount of zinc which is circulating in the body.

Why is it important for eczema?

Zinc deficiency is common among all eczema sufferers but especially in children who have eczema. It has an important role in many body functions, but three of its functions are significant for children with eczema:

  • it boosts the immune system to help the body fight infection
  • helps the skin to grow and heal wounds
  • increases the good bacteria in the gut which is often out of balance in children with eczema

Recent studies have shown that increasing zinc in patients with eczema showed an improvement in eczema symptoms, and in some cases patients no longer showed any signs of having eczema.

How do I increase zinc in my child’s diet?

There are foods which can help to increase the amount in the body. These foods are seafood, wheat germ, spinach, pumpkin seeds, cashews, dark chocolate and mushrooms.

Supplementing your child’s diet with zinc

Before adding a supplement to your child’s diet, talk to your doctor to find out if it is likely your child’s level of zinc is low, they may also recommending testing to see what your child’s level is before starting a supplement. If a supplement is recommended talk to your health professional about the different options available, some supplements are formulated with Vitamin A and D to increase the availability of zinc to the body.

While you are considering the role of zinc in eczema don’t forgot to stick to your eczema skincare routine to help maintain the moisture and hydration in your child’s skin to lessen flare ups and infection.
