Wearing sunscreen is so important! As we all know, it protects our skin for sun damage and risk of skin cancer. It also helps to prevent collagen breakdown and premature ageing. Without sunscreen, blemishes can become more visible and the skin can be more prone to wrinkling or sagging.

Regular vs. Mineral sunscreen

Regular chemical sunscreen contain ingredients that can potentially cause serious health problems as mentioned previously, whilst Mineral sunscreens contain ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which absorbs ultraviolet rays. It works by physically blocking the sun's rays by creating a physical barrier on the skin.

Mineral sunscreen uses ingredients like Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide. Zinc converts the energy to infrared heat, which radiates safely away from the skin surface. It is the most effective sun protector available, blocking out both shorter and longer wave UVA rays as well as all UVB rays. In this respect, zinc oxide is better than titanium dioxide (across a greater range of UVA wavelength). In fact, zinc oxide is the only active sunscreen ingredient that covers the entire UVA/UVB spectrum by itself.

Mineral sunscreens tend to be more suitable for sensitive & eczema-prone skin.

Harmful chemicals found in recalled sunscreens

It's fair to say that the recent findings of popular sun creams in the market not living up to their SPF claims, are shocking! Sun creams costing up to £28 per bottle are revealed to be unsafe and ineffective, according to sources from Daily MailSunscreens offer protection against harmful UV rays emitting from the sun that can cause cancerous skin damage. A rough estimate of 100,000 Brits and 3 million Americans are diagnosed every year.

Trending sunscreens have also been recalled by the Therapeutic Goods Administration due to the presence of benzene detected. Customers who have purchased the affected products have been advised to return the product and request for a refund.

What is Benzene and its risks?

The chemical Benzene, has a strong correlation to causing cancer in humans, depending on the level and length of exposure. This is not an ingredient in sunscreens but its presence can occur through contamination in raw materials during manufacturing.

Sunscreens sold in Australia must have Benzene levels of below 2 parts per million (ppm). Although the risks are low and would not be expected to cause serious health effects, prolonged use of the affected products is a concern and it is strongly advised to discontinue using it.
